ChatGPT prompts for joiners and carpenters (UK)
These prompts cover the messages a joiner or carpenter writes every week: quotes, lead times, building regulations notes, variations, snagging and review requests. Fill in the [brackets], paste into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and check the draft before you send it. AI tools can get rules wrong, so check anything legal yourself. We checked the rules below on 15 October 2026.

Quotes
1. Quote for fitted furniture or a bespoke job
Write a clear quote for [customer name] for [job, such as fitted alcove cupboards in the living room]. Include: materials ([timber or board, finish]), what's included ([fitting, painting, hardware]), what's not ([decorating, electrics]), the price [£amount, saying whether it includes VAT], deposit [amount] to order materials, lead time ([weeks]), and how long fitting takes. Plain English, British spelling.
2. Timber price change clause
Write a short, fair clause for my quotes saying the price is fixed for [days]; after that, if timber or sheet material costs rise by more than [%] before I order, I'll tell the customer the new price in writing and they can choose to go ahead or cancel without charge. Plain English, British spelling, under 100 words.

3. Cancellation notice for quotes agreed at the customer's home
Write a short, plain-English cancellation notice to go with quotes I agree in customers' homes. Say they can cancel within 14 days, how to do it ([email/phone/form]), and what happens if they ask me to start, or I've made bespoke items, within the 14 days ([our policy, checked against the Consumer Contracts Regulations]). British spelling, under 150 words.
If you agree a contract in the customer's home, you must tell them they can cancel within 14 days. If you don't, they can cancel for up to 12 months. Contracts of £42 or less are exempt (GOV.UK: doorstep selling).
Building regulations
4. Windows and doors: who signs off the work
Write a short note for my quotes for replacement windows and external doors explaining how the work will meet building regulations: either [I'm registered with a competent person scheme: name] and will register the work, or [we'll apply to building control, and the fee is £amount, included or extra]. Say the customer will get a certificate they should keep for when they sell. Plain English, British spelling, under 120 words.
GOV.UK lists replacing windows and doors among the jobs that can need building regulations approval. The customer doesn't need to get approval themselves if the work is done by someone registered with a competent person scheme (GOV.UK: building regulations approval). Without approval, they may not have the certificates they need when they sell.
5. Staircases, fire doors and structural work: check first
Write a short message to [customer name] saying that before I quote for [job, such as removing a wall / new staircase / fire doors in a loft conversion], we need to check what building regulations apply, and that I'll [speak to building control / get a structural engineer's advice] first. Explain this protects them when they sell. British spelling, under 120 words.
If you can't decide whether a job needs approval, GOV.UK says to check with a building control body.
During and after the job
6. Lead time and delay update
Write a short, honest message to [customer name] saying their [job] is delayed by [time] because [honest reason: materials, workshop, weather], the new expected fitting date ([date]), and what I'm doing to keep it on track. Apologetic but not grovelling, British spelling, under 120 words.
7. Variation: the customer wants a change
Write a short message confirming a change [customer name] asked for: [change]. Give the extra cost ([£amount]) or saving, any effect on the finish date, and ask them to reply "agreed" before I go ahead. British spelling, under 120 words.
Every service must be performed with reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (section 49), and if a contract doesn't fix the price, the consumer must pay a reasonable price (section 51). Agreeing changes in writing avoids disputes.
8. Snagging visit
Write a short message to [customer name] after fitting their [job], asking them to note anything that needs adjusting over the next [weeks], such as doors that need easing as the timber settles, and offering a free snagging visit on [date or "when suits"]. Friendly, British spelling, under 120 words.
9. Ask for a Google review
Write a short text to [customer name] thanking them for having me fit their [job] and asking if they'd leave an honest Google review here: [link]. Easy to say no, no discount or gift, under 300 characters, British spelling.
Don't offer anything in return for reviews: see can Google detect fake reviews?
10. Portfolio post
Write a short Instagram post about a joinery job: [what I made], [timber or materials], [finish], [how long it took]. Honest, no customer address, British spelling, under 120 words, plus 5 hashtags.
